Gov. Umo Eno Commissions Solar-powered Water Project in Ukanafun

In a significant development for the Ikot Oku Usung Community in Ukanafun LGA, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has commissioned a solar-powered water project that promises to transform the community’s daily life and economize their spending by approximately ₦18.5 million annually.
During the commissioning event, Governor Umo Eno who was represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Ubuo Ubuo emphasized the importance of community ownership of government projects, urging citizens to protect and maintain these facilities as part of their civic responsibility.
The installation is the first among eleven solar-powered water projects slated for execution across different communities.
He stated that Governor Umo Eno’s administration strives to ensure that every locality in Akwa Ibom State experiences tangible benefits from government initiatives.
The Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Council, Hon. Prince Uyo Ukpanah, expressed gratitude for Governor Umo Eno’s leadership, highlighting the positive changes ushered into rural communities under his administration.
He affirmed the council’s commitment to safeguarding the new water project and mentioned other programmes that have positively benefited the community.
Also, Barrister Emah Udonsek, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, provided an overview of the solar-powered water project.
According to the Permanent Secretary, “the 2.6 kilowatt solar panel system ensures continuous operation, providing water 24 hours a day.
“A 22,000-liter tank, equipped with a treatment plant, aims to eliminate waterborne diseases among residents.”
The project not only serves Ikot Oku Usung but also benefits the neighboring Ikot Ekperikpe community and CCC Secondary School.
The installation of a wash pump is expected to be completed soon, further enhancing the project’s utility.
Chief Umana J. Umana, the village head of Ikot Oku Usung, praised Governor Umo Eno for improving the community’s situation, stating, “We have drunk from the stream for many years and faced numerous illnesses. The distance to the water source was over two kilometers. We thank God for Pastor Umo Eno, who has finally come to our rescue.”
He assured the Governor of the community’s commitment to protecting the project.
Residents also expressed their appreciation. Mrs. Eno Frank JP remarked on the hardships caused by the previous reliance on distant water sources, emphasizing how the new system significantly alleviates their struggles.
Mr. Savior Udoh, head of the Akwa Ibom State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, highlighted the financial relief the project brings noting that the community is expected to save millions previously spent on purchasing water from vendors, highlighting the profound economic impact this solar-powered water project is set to achieve.
Governor Umo Eno’s initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing water accessibility in rural areas while promoting health and economic well-being. As communities take ownership of such projects, the sustainability and effectiveness of these initiatives are expected to increase, ultimately fostering a sense of responsibility and pride among the citizens of Akwa Ibom State.
